At Birkdale North School, we use a Structured Literacy approach to support all students in becoming confident and capable readers and writers. Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach that teaches literacy skills in a clear, explicit, and systematic way. Rather than expecting children to “pick up” reading and writing naturally, skills are carefully taught step-by-step, giving students the tools they need to understand how language works.
Our Structured Literacy programme is built around two key approaches — BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach) and The Code. Together, these approaches focus on developing strong foundations in oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, reading fluency, comprehension, and writing.
Students are explicitly taught the connection between sounds and letters, how words are formed, and the patterns and rules within the English language. Lessons are carefully sequenced so that new learning builds on previously taught skills, helping students develop confidence, automaticity, and success over time.
BSLA supports our early learners by strengthening oral language and early reading foundations through rich language experiences and structured teaching. The Code builds on this by providing explicit instruction in phonics and spelling patterns, helping students become accurate and fluent readers, writers, and spellers.
Structured Literacy lessons are interactive, engaging, and responsive to students’ needs. Teachers use assessment information to identify strengths and next steps, ensuring targeted support and opportunities for extension. Through this approach, we aim to create positive literacy experiences where every child feels successful, supported, and empowered as a learner.
